We wanted to show you what we see while walking thousands of plots across multiple states each year.

2023 MN Drought Stress

National brand corn hybrids often exhibit signs of drought stress long before BASS Durayield hybrids do in dry conditions. BASS hybrids still need water, but Durayield hybrids can get you an extra 7-10 days before showing signs stress. That’s extra time to wait for the next rain.

National Brand vs Durayield Under Drought Stress

Two hybrids of the same maturity (104 day) grown in Dawson, MN in 2020. This photo was taken in early September. BASS Durayield hybrids have better drought tolerance and staygreen in hot, dry conditions.

2021 Olivia MN Drought Stress

National Brand vs BASS Hybrids under drought stress. This BASS hybrid (Madeline) is not even a Durayield product! Even the hybrids we do not label as Durayield are generally tougher than other products of the same maturities, even those hybrids released by the big name, national brand companies with all the bells and whistles. And BASS products still yield the same or higher in the absence of stress.

BASS Durayield hybrid Queen (RM 95) next to a national brand hybrid (RM 97) during a dry year in Gettysburg. This was taken in late August. The Durayield corn stays greener longer under hot, dry conditions.

July 2020 Drought Stress

National Brand vs Durayield under severe drought stress. Durayield hybrids are more tolerant to drought and heat stress than big national brand hybrids.

Durayield Characteristics

Some of the characteristics that Durayield products have are wide leaves and lots of roots.

Photo is of a corn field with an obvious grid pattern of research plots. Alleys (uniform gaps in the rows) are seen separating different varieties every 20 feet within a row. Every four rows across the field, the corn looks different. Scattered in a checkerboard pattern are 4-row plots of corn that is drier and browner than the greener corn plots surrounding them.

Bird Island Yield Trials – 2020

Aerial photo of our 2020 Bird Island yield trial location, which was dry. The browner plots are the repeating check hybrid (control) we use as a yield and phenotypic measure. This check hybrid was developed using industry standard breeding methods. The remaining hybrids are our first year screening trials of hybrids developed using BASS breeding methods.
